Reflection:
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:9
When I think about my best friend from high school, I remember late-night conversations about girls, about church, about our futures. I remember lots of laughter and a few tears, I remember working together and playing hard together. I remember someone who knew more about me than anyone else – and still wanted to be my friend. Those are very good memories.
I wonder sometimes what the disciple John remembered most about Jesus. We blessed with one gospel, three letters and a record of revelations from him. But in his quiet time, what came to his mind?
Abiding shows up repeatedly in his Gospel. Tangible demonstrations of love run through his letters, and Jesus’ victorious presence rings through Revelation. I wonder what he missed most when he thought of his time with Jesus.
Friendship is a precious gift. We have that gift from Jesus. Run with that thought this week. With Him, it is never a love determined by whim or fate – it is His commitment.
